UK CAR LOCKOUT — WHO TO CALL

Locked your keys inside the car in the UK — locksmith, breakdown cover, or dealership?

Check your breakdown cover first. Most UK breakdown policies (AA, RAC, Green Flag, Britannia) include a “vehicle lockout” call-out you have already paid for in your annual premium. If breakdown cover is out of scope, an auto-locksmith is £80 to £200 all-in for a straight door-open on an older car; a modern keyless-entry car may need a dealer visit at £150 to £500. Full comparison below.

Your three options, in the order to try them

  1. 1
Breakdown cover (AA, RAC, Green Flag, Britannia)
    Cost: £0 – £40 (usually free)
    Timing: 30 – 90 min ETA

Most UK breakdown policies include "lockout" or "keys locked in vehicle" as a standard call-out — you have already paid for it in your annual premium. Check the schedule under Personal Cover / Roadside / Homestart. Employer schemes (some employer car allowances include AA Business) and premium credit cards (Amex Platinum, some Barclaycard tiers) sometimes bundle it too.

When to pick this: You have any breakdown policy — check first. Even non-motor policies (some home insurance emergency add-ons) can include vehicle lockout.
  2. 2
    Auto-locksmith (mobile, specialist)
    Cost: £80 – £200 all-in for a straight slim-jim / airbag entry
    Timing: 30 – 60 min ETA in-city

Right for older cars (pre-2015-ish) with mechanical door locks or immobiliser-only entry. An auto-locksmith carries slim jims, air-wedges and specialist picks. If a key needs cutting or programming on the spot, add £80 – £300 for the key (transponder chip, immobiliser sync). Some carry mobile key-cutting rigs.

When to pick this: You have no breakdown cover, or your breakdown provider says the car is out of scope. Also right for scheduled key-cutting jobs where the car is drivable but you want a spare.
  3. 3
    Main dealer / manufacturer approved
    Cost: £150 – £500+ (recovery + key + programming)
Timing: Same-day-ish for common brands; longer for premium

The right answer for modern smart cars — keyless-entry vehicles (most 2018+ BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Range Rover, Tesla) where entry is via encrypted radio protocol rather than a mechanical lock. Auto-locksmiths cannot always help; you may need the car recovered to the dealer for a key re-pair.

When to pick this: Your car is a keyless-entry model AND the auto-locksmith says they cannot help, OR the car needs a full replacement key programmed to the immobiliser.

The modern smart-car caveat

Traditional locksmith techniques (slim jim, air wedge) do not work on many post-2018 cars. Three things to know:

  • Keyless-entry cars (most 2018+ BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Range Rover, Tesla, plus many Ford / Vauxhall high-trim models) do not have a traditional mechanical lock the locksmith can pick.
  • For those cars, an auto-locksmith can sometimes access via a physical override slot behind a trim panel, but for a full "open the door" without the fob, dealer / manufacturer intervention is often needed.
  • If the fob battery has died, the fob usually contains a hidden mechanical blade — check the fob for a slide-out button; the blade opens the physical lock cylinder (often hidden under a trim cap on the door handle).

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to unlock a car in the UK in 2026?+
Nothing if your breakdown cover includes a lockout call-out (most AA / RAC / Green Flag / Britannia policies do — check first). Otherwise a UK auto-locksmith is £80 to £200 all-in for a straight door-open on an older car with a mechanical lock. For a modern smart car (keyless entry), you may need a dealer visit — £150 to £500 or more.
Does AA / RAC breakdown cover include locked keys in the car?+
Standard AA and RAC policies include a lockout call-out as part of Roadside cover. Look for "vehicle lockout" or "keys locked in vehicle" in the policy schedule under Personal Cover, Roadside, or Homestart. Green Flag and Britannia typically include similar cover. If the policy is very basic, the lockout may be excluded — call the number on your card to confirm before you agree to any other trader.
Can a locksmith open a modern keyless-entry car in the UK?+
Sometimes — a good auto-locksmith can open many keyless cars via a physical override slot behind trim, or by activating the emergency mechanical blade hidden in the fob. Some cannot, in which case you need the car recovered to a dealer for a full key re-pair. Ask on the phone before the trader sets off, giving them the exact make and year.
Is it worth breaking a car window to get in?+
Almost never. A UK auto-locksmith for a straight door-open is £80 to £200; a replacement window on most modern cars is £150 to £400 plus fitting and a day without the car. The exception is a safety emergency — a child or pet locked in on a hot day, medication needed urgently — where entry priority overrides cost. Call 999 in a genuine emergency; the fire service will attend a vulnerable-person entry.
What if the auto-locksmith on the phone quotes £59 for the call-out?+
The £59 headline for a car unlock is the same pattern as the £59 house-lockout bait: it covers the call-out only, and the actual job then costs several hundred pounds more once the trader is on site. Ask for the TOTAL for your specific car (give the make, model, year, and whether it has keyless entry), including labour and any parts, in writing before the trader sets off. See our 'no-call-out-fee' explainer for the mechanic.
The fob works but the car will not respond — is that a locksmith job?+
Usually not. Try the spare key first; if the spare works, the primary fob likely needs a battery. If both fobs fail and the car has no response even with the fob touching the start button, it may be a car-electrical or immobiliser issue — call breakdown first, then the dealer. An auto-locksmith is the right call only if the car door will not open with a valid key.
