UK LOCKSMITH TIME-CHECK

Fair labour time for a UK lockout — the minute-by-minute breakdown

A genuine UK residential lockout runs about 15 to 45 minutes from arrival to invoice when the door opens without damage, or up to 60 to 90 minutes if the cylinder or lock has to be replaced. Anything materially longer usually reflects the difficulty being invented, the wrong tools, or the labour line being padded. Below: the task breakdown, the padding tactics to watch for, and how to sanity-check the minutes on your own invoice.

The task breakdown for a UK residential lockout

TaskFair minutes
Arrival check-in and initial assessment
Confirming the door and lock type, checking your ID, agreeing what will be attempted. A genuine locksmith does this at your door, not on the phone.
2 – 5 min
Non-destructive entry attempt (picking, bumping, slipping)
The methods that leave your lock intact. A competent locksmith opens the majority of residential doors this way. Drilling is a last resort, not step one.
5 – 20 min
Cylinder pull (if non-destructive entry has failed)
Removing the cylinder without destroying the whole mechanism. Requires the door to already be partially accessible and specific tools.
5 – 15 min
Cylinder or lock replacement (only if needed)
Fitting a new cylinder or full lock. This is the largest genuine labour block on a lockout invoice, and it only applies if the previous steps failed or the lock was already broken.
15 – 30 min
Testing, cleanup, invoicing
Confirming the new lock works with your key, tidying the workspace, generating the invoice.
5 – 10 min
Standard non-destructive lockout — total15 – 45 min
Lockout requiring lock replacement — total60 – 90 min

Ranges reflect published 2026 UK price-guide sources (Checkatrade, Fantastic Services, MyBuilder) and the physical realities of standard uPVC multi-point, mortice deadlock and euro-cylinder residential doors.

Five common labour-padding tactics

Each of these turns a fair job into an unfair invoice. Ask for the itemisation before you pay if you see any of them.

  • Charging labour for travel time
Travel is not labour. It is either included in the call-out fee, or a separately-quoted mileage charge. If travel appears on the labour line, the invoice is inflated.
  • Charging labour for waiting time
The minutes between finishing the job and being paid are not labour. Neither is the wait for you to fetch cash from an ATM. If the invoice shows labour running past the moment the last screw went in, ask for the itemisation.
  • Rounding every task to a full hour
A 22-minute pick job billed as "one hour of labour" is 175% padding. Ask for actual minutes — the trader's own timesheet or job log if they have one.
  • Billing labour AND a "diagnostic" AND a "call-out" AND an "assessment fee"
Two of those are the same thing, and often three are. A clean invoice separates travel (call-out), time (labour) and parts. Stacked fees for what is actually one activity are how a £59 headline becomes a £320 bill.
  • "Difficulty surcharge" for a standard uPVC door
Standard residential uPVC multi-point locks are the most common door type in the UK. Any surcharge for one being "complex" is unlikely to be genuine and needs a specific technical reason on the invoice.

The two-line sanity check for your invoice

You can check whether a labour charge is fair in about 30 seconds:

The maths

Fair labour cost = hourly rate ÷ 60 × minutes actually worked.

Example: at £85 / hour, a 30-minute pick-and-open job is £85 ÷ 60 × 30 = £42.50 in labour, plus the call-out fee and any parts. A labour line above about £50 on a job that took 30 minutes is worth challenging.

For elapsed time, your phone is the timestamp source: the outbound call to the locksmith, the moment they arrived at your door (your ring doorbell or a text you sent), the moment you paid. Elapsed time is the ceiling on labour minutes — labour cannot exceed elapsed.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a UK residential lockout take, start to finish?+
A genuine residential lockout in the UK typically runs 15 to 45 minutes from arrival to invoice, when the locksmith can open the door without damage. Add a further 15 to 30 minutes if the cylinder or lock has to be replaced. Anything much beyond 60 minutes on a standard door usually reflects the difficulty being invented, the equipment being wrong, or the labour line being padded.
What is a fair UK locksmith hourly labour rate in 2026?+
Published 2026 UK price guides (Checkatrade, Fantastic Services, MyBuilder) put a fair daytime labour rate at around £65 to £90 per hour, rising to £90 to £150 per hour for out-of-hours or emergency work in London and the South East. The rate is one variable; the number of minutes actually worked is the other, and the multiplication of the two is your labour cost.
Should travel time be on my locksmith invoice as labour?+
No. Travel is what a call-out fee is for. If a trader charges you both a call-out fee and adds travel minutes into the labour line, they are billing for the same thing twice. Ask them to move one or the other off the invoice.
How do I know if a locksmith padded the minutes?+
The strongest sanity check is the elapsed time between arrival and departure — a figure your phone can produce from your call log or door camera. Compare the labour minutes on the invoice to that window, subtract the reasonable non-labour minutes (paperwork, tidying, being paid). If labour minutes exceed elapsed minutes, the invoice is wrong.
Do I have to pay for a full hour if the job took twenty minutes?+
Only if you were told, in writing, before the work started that labour would be billed in full-hour blocks with a minimum charge. Without that written agreement, section 51 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says only a reasonable price is payable — and a reasonable price for twenty minutes of work is twenty minutes at the hourly rate, not sixty.
What if the locksmith says the lock is "special" and needs a longer job?+
Ask for the specific reason on the invoice — the lock brand, the model, the technical feature that makes it slower. "Special lock" without a named model or a photograph is the classic on-site excuse for a doubled labour bill. Standard UK residential uPVC multi-points, mortice deadlocks and euro cylinders are not "special" and do not take longer than the ranges above.
