UK WEEKEND & BANK-HOLIDAY SURCHARGE

Weekend and bank-holiday locksmith surcharge — what is fair, and when it is a rip-off

Weekend and bank-holiday surcharges on a UK locksmith call-out are legitimate — engineers on rota outside 9-5 cost more to hire, and that cost gets recovered somewhere. Two things cap the fairness: the percentage genuine traders charge (typically + 20 – 60 % on top of the weekday rate, with bank-holiday nights up to + 75 %), and the requirement it is quoted in writing before the trader sets off. A surcharge sprung on the invoice, or applied to a weekday, is not weekend pricing — it is a bigger bill dressed up.

Fair-range surcharge percentages, by time slot

Percentages are on top of the trader’s standard weekday-daytime rate for the same job. Compare against the actual figure on your written quote before you agree.

Time slotFair premium
Saturday daytime (~08:00 – 18:00)
Standard weekend rate. Most emergency traders operate a full Saturday rota.
+ 20 – 35 %
on top of the trader's weekday-daytime hourly rate
Saturday evening / night (~18:00 – 24:00)
Combined weekend + evening premium. Trader dispatches an on-call engineer.
+ 35 – 55 %
on top of the trader's weekday-daytime hourly rate
Sunday daytime
Same rate mechanics as Saturday daytime for most traders.
+ 25 – 40 %
on top of the trader's weekday-daytime hourly rate
Sunday evening / night
Highest weekend rate for most traders — end-of-weekend rota gap.
+ 40 – 60 %
on top of the trader's weekday-daytime hourly rate
Bank holiday daytime
Fewer engineers on rota. Rate reflects the scheduling scarcity.
+ 40 – 60 %
on top of the trader's weekday-daytime hourly rate
Bank holiday evening / night
The peak premium — combined bank-holiday and out-of-hours.
+ 50 – 75 %
on top of the trader's weekday-daytime hourly rate

Four surcharge patterns that are not fair

Any one of these on its own is enough to question the invoice before you pay.

  • ×
Surcharge charged on a normal weekday
Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 18:00 is not "out of hours". Any weekend or evening premium on a weekday-daytime job is not weekend pricing — it is just a bigger bill dressed up.
  • ×
"Weekend rate" claimed on Friday afternoon
Friday is a weekday. A surcharge from the moment the trader picks up the phone at 16:00 on a Friday is a headline stretched past its honest meaning.
  • ×
Surcharge sprung on the invoice, not quoted before dispatch
A legitimate weekend or bank-holiday premium is quoted in writing before the trader sets off, so you can accept or decline. A number added at the end, that was never mentioned on the phone, is a breach — section 51 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 means only a reasonable price is payable where none was fixed.
  • ×
Surcharge stacked on top of an already-inflated headline
A £59 headline that becomes £450 because "it's a Saturday" is a compound trick. The Saturday premium on a genuine £70 base rate is meaningful; on a fabricated £59 headline it is a fig-leaf on a bait-and-switch.

The one-line rule that keeps you in a strong position

Send this before the trader sets off

“Please confirm in writing: what is the total price for this job at [Saturday night / Sunday morning / bank-holiday daytime], including the surcharge, VAT and any standard parts?”

A genuine trader will send a number back. If the reply is a wave-off (“we’ll sort it out on the day”), the surcharge is designed to grow on the invoice. Under section 51 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if no price is fixed only a reasonable price is payable — so a written total also gives you the strongest position if the invoice tries to move.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UK locksmith allowed to charge a weekend or bank-holiday surcharge?+
Yes. Weekend and bank-holiday premiums are a normal part of UK emergency-locksmith pricing — engineers cost more to have on-call outside standard hours, and the trader has to recover that cost. What the law does require is that the premium is disclosed in writing before you agree, so you can compare it or decline. A surcharge sprung on the invoice at the end, that was not quoted upfront, falls foul of section 51 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
What is a fair weekend surcharge percentage for a UK locksmith in 2026?+
Typical fair ranges are: Saturday daytime + 20 to 35 %; Saturday evening + 35 to 55 %; Sunday daytime + 25 to 40 %; Sunday evening + 40 to 60 %; bank-holiday daytime + 40 to 60 %; bank-holiday evening or overnight + 50 to 75 %. Percentages are on top of the trader's standard weekday-daytime rate for the same job.
Is a UK bank holiday the same as a Sunday for surcharge purposes?+
Broadly yes for lower-tier bank holidays, and higher for the four major ones (New Year's Day, Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day). Christmas Day and New Year's Day in particular typically attract a premium closer to the bank-holiday-evening range even during daytime, because engineer coverage collapses. The gov.uk bank holiday calendar (linked in Sources) is the official UK list.
Which UK days count as bank holidays for locksmith surcharge?+
The UK has different bank holidays in England & Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. In England & Wales the list is: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Early May bank holiday, Spring bank holiday, Summer bank holiday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Scotland substitutes 2 January and St Andrew's Day; Northern Ireland adds St Patrick's Day and Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen's) Day. The gov.uk calendar shows the exact dates for the current year.
The surcharge on my invoice looks well above your fair-range percentages — what do I do?+
Ask the trader for the specific technical reason in writing. A named brand of high-security lock, an unusually difficult job, remedial work uncovered on inspection — these are legitimate. A vague "we're busy" or "it's a Saturday" for a percentage above 75% is not. If you have already paid, run our dispute-strength check for a case-strength score and pre-filled complaint letter.
Do UK home insurance policies cover the weekend surcharge if a break-in happens?+
Most policies with emergency-locksmith cover pay for a reasonable call-out including out-of-hours premiums, up to a specified cap (commonly £250 to £500). The invoice must be from a trader you can identify and pay via traceable means. Read your own policy schedule for the exact wording and cap.
